Reel’s is a fairly new feature to Instagram, that allows you to create and share 15-second videos on your feed. With the rise in TikTok this is a great move from Instagram, digital media is ever changing and this type of “snackable” content is becoming more and more popular.

You will now see a new icon pop up on your Instagram app, which is dedicated to reels once you make your very first one. You can utilise reels features by editing, adding effects, music or other creative elements to your reels straight from the app itself much like TikTok.

Instagram gives Reels a dedicated landing spot at the top of the explore page, this means your video can be pushed through the algorithm to reach users.

What is the difference between reels and stories?

Well, even though these two features sound very similar they have some notable differences and can be used in unison to help promote your business.

As mentioned above, you can do a lot more with reels from editing including AR effects, speed controls and the option to edit multiple clips together. However, stories are a limited time story, although you do now have the option to save as a highlight, this is not something that is easily customisable.

Another notable difference is you have the choice to add your reels to your feed or they can show up in the explore page. Any reel you create will also appear in a dedicated section of your profile, similar to IGTV posts.

Similar to how TikTok works, if you include any original audio it will be attributed to you, and other users can use it to create new reels.

The Instagram algorithm favours users who engage with all aspects of the platform, this means the more you engage on Instagram the more Instagram will reward you by showing your posts to more of your followers.
