It’s no secret that Artificial Intelligence is everywhere now. It shapes your social media feeds, sends you automated messages on LinkedIn and is often the first line of defence you come across when trying to contact a retailer about your online order.
AI is taking over more and more roles every day, many of which are in the creative industries. But, just because it cantechnically do something, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is doing it well.
Web design and development is one of the areas currently being affected by the rise of AI. Whether it is predicted to fully take over the industry and render all workers redundant or not is still up for debate, however its prevalence cannot be ignored.
The roles of web designers and developers, like those in many other creative roles, are shifting and adapting to accommodate AI. With many essential platforms, such as Figma, offering integrated AI features, designers might already be more reliant on AI than they are aware of.
AI is being increasingly adopted across many areas, predominantly taking on monotonous or time-consuming basic tasks. This can be considered beneficial in some ways, as it frees up the workers to spend time on more complicated tasks.
There are, however, many aspects of a web designer or developers role that AI cannot replicate. If you have spent any time on social media, or even walking down your local high street recently, you will likely have been witness to the epidemic of AI-generated posters and fliers that are being used currently by many businesses and organisations. A quick glance at these ‘designs’ will tell you that AI does not have much of a creative flair – they all have the same layout, use the same typefaces and showcase visually jarring AI-generated images. This is clear evidence that AI does not understand what constitutes good design, and cannot truly generate work that reflects a brand. This feeds into a lack of understanding of strategy, audience perception and tone – all key components of creating branded content or material.
This is where human designers and developers retain their upper hand. AI can try to do the difficult stuff, and it technically can, but it falls short of human technique every time.
So, can AI build you a website?
Yes, it can.
Will it be as effective, impactful and technically correct as a website built by a trained professional?
Absolutely not.
